They REALLY Did it

May 18th thru May 22nd, 2003

"The Hargraves really did come see us!"

To how many folks have you said, "come see us" and how many times have they said, "we will definitely do it". Well we said and Chris and Phil said, and by golly they did it! We actually got to do some of the touristy things we have always wanted to do, and it was a ball.

Here is Phil and I with those Las Vegas showgirls again, checking out Montezuma's Well. A bit of a hike, but worth seeing.

Montezuma's Castle was a well preserved collection of cliff dwellings that probably had nothing to do with Montezuma. Did give an interesting look at how the early Arizona natives lived.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, AZ is one of the most stunning churches I have seen. Set in a mountain side, Carolyn and I first saw it in a car trip to Flagstaff several years ago and meandered around the back roads until we found our way there. We knew that Chris and Phil would appreciate the beauty and peace to be found there as much as we did. The road and access is a LOT better marked now.

Darn, there are those Las Vegas show girls, Carolyn and Chris, on one of the many overlooks in Grand Canyon Park.

Check out the hiking trail visible in the lower right corner of this picture. If you are interested, ask for directions to the Bright Angel Trailhead. A short 12 mile down hill stroll gets you to the Phantom Ranch and Campgrounds. Now the 12 miles out and 5000 feet up you will long remember...I am told.

Anyone familiar with the Canyon will recognize the Watchtower at the extreme south end of the Park. Overlooks a great view of the canyon and a section of the Painted Desert. Built in the thirties of native stone and designed to blend in and look OLD, it offered awesome views from those lookout windows at the top.

Should mention the fun day Phil and I had on Lake Bartlett with son Chris and his lovely bride Jodi. They skied and we drove and rode.

Carolyn and buddy Chris went to the Deere Valley Rock Art Center to look at OLD Petroglyphs that have been preserved there. Now what the heck are petroglyphs you ask? They are images painted on rock, cliff and cave surfaces by folks long ago. Carolyn and Chris bought books that translate what the artist meant by the symbology. There are folks that study and understand this stuff.

A fun visit and trip. Now that you got a quick look at the sights north of us, are you ready to head south? Bunches we didn't see...this time...including Old Towne and Mexico. How is your Spanish. Making the next trip in the winter makes the look south even more attractive.
